Help Support Our New Barrier-Free Playground
Sand Creek Elementary School, located in Coon Rapids, MN, is part of the Anoka Hennepin Public School District and serves over 800 students.
In the summer of 2014, Sand Creek Elementary had a need to build an expansion to its current building to accommodate the population growth in the Coon Rapids area. As part of this expansion Sand Creek was able to build appropriate classroom space to accommodate the needs of DCD students that were unable to attend Sand Creek as their home school prior to these changes. The expansion only covered the facilities though. The playground still does not accommodate the physical and emotional needs for these students. When these students want to play in a safe environment, they need to travel over 10 miles to the nearest barrier-free playground that is accessible for them and fits their needs for play.
We would like to provide a playground not only for those students at Sand Creek but for the entire community to enjoy. Inclusive play is not just about those children with physical and mental challenges, It is for all children and adults to play together.
