Rock 'n' Read Project

A nonprofit organization

All children ready-to-read through musical fitness

CRISIS
1/3 of MN 4th and 8th grade students CANNOT read at a basic level.

A SOLUTION
Research has found that children who sing and have basic music skills are better readers. So, let's make sure that all young children are musically fit:  they can pat a steady beat, clap the rhythm of the words of a song (every syllable), match pitches with their voice, and sing in tune.

WHO WE ARE
The Rock 'n' Read Project uses neuroscientifically-based strategies to develop the brain's auditory processing, auditory memory, phonological processing, and beat synchronization (ability to pat a steady beat). With MN state funding, we ran a 5-year state project that helped 2500 2nd-5th grade students gain one year (avg.) in reading after 14 hours of using a singing-based software intervention.

We're now focused on ages birth through kindergarten.

WHAT WE OFFER

  1. A free Musical Fitness Assessment for parents and teachers to use with young children https://www.rocknreadproject.org/musical-fitness-assessment
  2. Workshops for early childhood and kindergarten teachers
  3. "A Song a Day! Brain Prep for Pre-Readers," 50 short, sequenced lessons for PreK-K children
  4. A Research Bibliography of neuroscientific and other studies about the effects of singing and music-making on brain development and achievement

OUR EVIDENCE

  1. 2500 students made one year (avg.) gain on the MN state reading test (MCA) after using a singing-based program for 14 hours.
  2. First graders with better music skills (using our Musical Fitness Assessment) scored higher on a reading assessment (FastBridge)
  3. PreK and K students' basic music skills improved significantly after participating in 50 daily lessons from A Song a Day curriculum.
