A CRISIS
Too many children—69% on the 2022 national reading test—cannot read proficiently! What if there is something natural and motivating that could help enable all children's brains for reading? A hidden, missing link? There is! It’s auditory processing. And it's developed through singing and music-making.
WHO WE ARE
The Rock 'n' Read Project is the only Minnesota organization that uses neuroscientific-based singing and music-making strategies to specifically enable auditory processing, auditory memory, phonological processing, and beat synchronization—all foundational skills the brain needs for proficient reading. With grants of $600,000 from the MN Legislature, we helped 2500 students in 25 elementary schools make tremendous gains in reading achievement in a very short time. Now we’re helping hundreds of PreK and K children with our new curriculum, A Song a Day: Brain Prep for Pre-Readers, 50 sequenced lessons to enable young children's brains for auditory processing. Neuroscience has found that keeping a steady beat overlaps with reading achievement in the brain--children who cannot keep a steady beat are likely to struggle with reading!
WHAT WE OFFER
1. Presentations for parents and PreK and elementary teachers.
2. The Rock ‘n’ Read Course to help PreK and elementary teachers learn how to use singing strategies daily to enable all students' brains for reading.
3. A Song a Day! Brain Prep for Pre-Readers, 50 sequenced lessons for PreK-K children that use singing to enable the brain for language and reading.
4. Zap the Gap, a campaign for a state-funded program to get all children reading proficiently through singing.
RESULTS
Singing and music-making quickly and effectively enable children's auditory processing, the KEY to literacy. After using Rock 'n' Read's singing and music-making strategies:
* 2500 students in 25 elementary schools made 1 year (avg.) gain in reading achievement on the MN test after using a singing-based software for 14 hours.
* Three kindergarten classes at one school outscored and made the most gains in letter sounds from fall to winter of 50 district schools.
* A kindergarten class outscored all kindergarten classes of 40 district schools in letter sounds.
* A first grade class with only 1/3 of students reading proficiently (at grade level) in the fall improved to near 100% proficiency by spring.
* After only three months, a fourth grade class significantly outscored and made more gain overall in reading fluency than the other class in the school.
