Rakhma Homes: Compassionate, Inclusive Memory Care Since 1984

Over four decades ago, in an era of institutional settings, Rakhma's founder, Shirley Shaw, introduced a revolutionary idea — that people with memory loss deserve compassionate, customized care in a warm, home-like environment. Rakhma, the first residential memory care in Minnesota and one of the first in North America, was more than just a business. It helped pioneer a movement.

Sadly, Shirley's idea is still revolutionary. The kind of intimate model Shirley envisioned is financially out of reach for most families today. While large, impersonal settings remain the norm for manyRakhma remains a steadfast example of what the future of memory care should look like — rooted in love, deeply personal, and accessible to all, regardless of financial means.

Today, Rakhma continues to deliver the highest quality of memory care in our three original homes: Rakhma Joy Home in St. Paul, Rakhma Peace Home in Minneapolis, and Rakhma Grace Home in Minnetonka. And we continue to hold the belief that people living with memory loss deserve comfort, belonging, and love in a real home, not a facility.

That commitment shows in our outcomes. According to the MDH’s Assisted Living Report Card, Rakhma’s Joy Home ranked #1 and Peace Home #3 in the seven-county metro for resident quality of life amongst memory-care providers.

With over 80% of our residents paying for services through Medicaid-funded programs like Elderly Waiver, our commitment to equity has never been stronger. This model is nearly unheard of in residential memory care, where private-pay models dominate — and for good reason. The gap between what the government provides and what our residents truly deserve is wide, and closing that gap takes lots of creativity and support.

That's where YOU come in!

It's because of you that Rakhma can continue bridging the gap between what people can afford and what they deserve.

This Give to the Max Day, we invite you to help us continue bridging this gap. Your support sustains Rakhma’s mission and cause — the same revolutionary idea Shirley introduced so many years ago!

Early giving is now open! Every gift—large or small—helps ensure that Rakhma remains a home for all.

Thank you for helping us prove that memory care doesn't have to be exclusive to be exceptional!
