Prepare + Prosper

Prepare + Prosper (P+P), the largest Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in Minnesota, was founded by a group of economic justice-oriented accountants in 1971. We began by providing free accounting services to small business owners and soon added individual tax preparation for low- to moderate-income taxpayers. Over the years, P+P has expanded our services to meet the needs of the community. Our programs now include: Free Tax Preparation; DIY Tax Prep; Self Employment Clinic; Money Mentors Financial Coaching; FAIR Banking; Financial Planning; and Advocacy/Systems Change.

We are grateful to serve our community in collaboration with our nearly 400+ volunteers; the work is vital for our 13,000+ customers. During the 2025 tax season, for example, P+P volunteers, partners, and staff filed nearly 26,000 returns, bringing more than $24,000,000 in refunds back to our communities.

Similar to many other nonprofit organizations, P+P has historically been funded by institutional partners, such as the State of Minnesota, Federal Government, and community foundations. However, institutional support, which many nonprofits rely on, is very unpredictable right now and will be for the foreseeable future. Because of this, P+P faces financial uncertainty as we head into the 2026 Tax Season, while seeing a significant uptick in customer inquiries and demand for our programs and services in the Twin Cities and outstate communities.  

With this in mind, we are turning to folks like you to partner with us in elevating the impact of individual giving to P+P. This move aligns with a national statistic – 90-95% of donations come from individuals, not institutions. More so, individual donations offer P+P:
