Please consider a gift to the Playwrights' Center. The pandemic has caused so much destruction to the theater industry, we need your support more than ever.
With theater stages dark and productions paused indefinitely, and with the compounding crises of health and racial disparities, the Center has taken a deep introspection of our values. Critically, we have considered who we are as an organization and how we serve our community. Here are just a few ways we’ve put this intention into action:
Healthcare stipends. This season, we initiated a permanent program of holistic support to Fellows, most of whom have no access to group health insurance.
Increased workshop time. We reinvested all previously budgeted housing and travel funds into and artist pay. In the last 52 weeks, we have employed more than 350 artists.
Adding to a more than decade-long commitment to diversify storytellers through programs like Many Voices, last summer, we invested in a collective of Black artists who responded to the murder of George Floyd through an online anthology of literature titled 'A Moment Of Silence' - https://blackmnvoices.com/.
Greeted more than 5,000 audience members across the globe to free online programs.
Our plans for the remainder of 2021 see us working in some form of virtual mode until it is unquestionably safe. We must remain nimble and ready for change.
Your support and advocacy will allow us to emerge, ready to respond to a world that is craving connection. Together, we can support the storytellers who will lead us as we gather, share, listen, and heal.
