English Learning Center
Our Saviour's Community Services provides dignified shelter and supportive housing for adults experiencing homelessness and classes for adult English learners.
When the pandemic began, we knew two things to be true. First, the essential services of emergency shelter, housing, and education were needed more than ever. Second, we had to adapt quickly and creatively to continue to safely meet this community need.
Seemingly overnight, our in-person school became a distance learning program. Our emergency shelter opened 24/7, operated out of a hotel for a year, and reduced capacity so guests could continue to have the privacy and security of their own room when we returned to our renovated shelter facility. These were no small feats, and many of you were with us every step of the way, helping to get us through. We couldn't have done it without you.
Twenty months later, COVID is still here - and the need for emergency shelter, housing, and education remains just as critical. However, while we continue to respond to the pandemic, we're also refusing to be defined by it. Taking all that we've learned in the past year and a half, we're boldly looking towards exciting changes ahead.
Your gift will help us move beyond COVID, as we transform and grow our work to respond to the critical needs of emergency shelter, housing, and education in our community.
YOUR GIFT WILL HELP US CLOSE A CRITICAL GAP IN HOMELESS SERVICES.
Your support will help us transition our emergency shelter to a medical-respite model by the end of the year. This means we will specialize in providing shelter, onsite healthcare staff, and other supportive services to unhoused adults who are being released from the hospital with a medical need that makes them too vulnerable to recover on the street or in a traditional shelter.
This change will allow us to make the best use of our unique shelter facility, which was originally designed as a medical clinic, as well as our location near two major hospitals. More importantly, your gift will allow us to address a critical gap in homeless services - a need the pandemic has made painfully apparent - and help ensure that everyone has a safe place to heal and recover as they search for permanent housing.

YOUR GIFT WILL HELP US SERVE TWICE AS MANY STUDENTS AS WE DID BEFORE COVID.
When the pandemic began, we never expected that nearly half of our students would tell us they preferred to stay online. But we found that online learning fit better into many students' lives, as they managed chaotic work schedules and cared for young children or elderly family members. It also removed barriers for those previously limited by mobility, distance, or transportation.
At the same time, the other half of our students were eager to return in-person, missing the personal connections that are hard to replicate on a screen.
This fall, in response to these diverse student needs, we resumed in-person classes, while also continuing all levels of English classes online - effectively doubling the number of students we are able to serve. Your gift will provide the necessary supplies, technology, volunteer support, and staffing to make this growth possible.

More than anything else, your gift - at whatever level is meaningful for you - makes it possible for more members of our community to safely access the essential services of shelter, stable housing, and education. Thank you for standing with us in this transformational work.
