Inflation, rising housing costs, and high food prices are pushing thousands of St. Croix County working families to the edge of their financial limits. For many, unexpected living expenses or loss of wages means having to choose between paying rent, buying groceries, fixing the car, or going to the doctor.
“I have one vehicle, and I am a single parent working Mon-Friday. I’ve put a lot of money car towards repairs but it needs more work. Repairs are $804.92.”
“I need help paying my $1,400 rent. Snow days at my child’s school caused me to miss work and severely affected my income.”
“I got a medical bill in the mail for $550. I am currently trying to work out a payment plan with the doctor. I am also the only one in the household who works and we’re taking care of two toddlers.”
Helping neighbors remain housed and nourished in times of need
Thanks to a caring community, volunteers, and generous supporters, there is help for local families and individuals facing financial hardship. Founded more than 35 years ago in Hudson, Operation HELP has grown to offer multiple programs to meet the needs of our local communities. The goals of Operation HELP services are to help local residents maintain stable housing situations; health and physical well-being; and a sense of emotional well-being and personal dignity when they face financial hardships. A primary goal is to help families and individuals remain healthy and housed. Programs include:
Emergency Financial Assistance—Help with rent, utility, and car repair expense payments. Fresh Harvest Pantry—Food shelf open 5 days per week with walk-in, curbside pick-up, or delivery service options. Resource Center—Open daily. Basic necessities include socks and underwear, toiletries, pet food, and other items plus vouchers for gas, food, and clothing. Backpack and school-based food—Serving Hudson School District. |
Diaper Bank—Monthly supplies of diapers and wipes are provided to families with young children. Temporary Emergency Shelter—1 to 3 days of emergency motel lodging for people who are facing health or safety risks but are unable to secure other shelter options. Budgeting Classes—Regular classes help clients understand and take charge of their household income and expense challenges. Christmas for Kids—Matching kids from families in the Hudson School District with generous sponsors who purchase gifts. |
Communities served include Baldwin, Deer Park, Emerald, Glenwood City, Hammond, Houlton, New Richmond, River Falls, Roberts, Somerset, Star Prairie, Wilson, Woodville, and cities and towns from adjacent counties. Many services are also available for people who are homeless.
Thanks to financial contributions from generous donors, no eligible client is turned away due to lack of funds . But it’s not always easy. Recent spikes in fuel, food, and housing costs continue to put financial pressure on households that were “just getting by.”
