MSP Film Society

A nonprofit organization

At MSP Film Society (MSP Film), we've harnessed the profound power of cinema to forge connections, promote understanding, and uplift diverse voices. In a world marked by global interconnectivity but also deep-seated divisions, we've remained steadfast in our mission: to bring the world of cinema to our community and build bridges of understanding and empathy all at The Main Cinema.

"I leave The Main Cinema after a movie that has made me laugh and cry --  and I feel changed.  My attitudes are challenged. Thanks to the power of great movies from around the world, I learn about different cultures and people by walking in their shoes for a couple of hours. This is the power of the great films offered by the MSP Film Society."  - Alex

Movies have an extraordinary power—they transport us to different worlds, evoke our deepest emotions and, most importantly, connect us.

Independently run and operated movie theaters like The Main Cinema play a crucial role in this cinematic journey. They serve as gathering places where diverse voices and stories from around the world come to life on the big screen.

With your support, we will keep offering a kaleidoscope of perspectives through our diverse year-round lineup featuring award-winning films from across the globe.

Together, let's bring the whole world to Minnesota through the magic of cinema.

Please contribute generously today.

In 2023, thanks to generous donors, all gifts will be matched dollar for dollar up to $2,000!

Everyone who donates any amount to the MSP Film Society on GiveMN before Dec. 31st, 2023 will be entered to win a 4-pack of tickets to The Main Cinema! Also, in honor of our 43rd Minneapolis St Paul International Film Festival next year, the 43rd person to donate will get a The Holdovers vinyl record and t-shirt.

MSP Film Society is committed to fostering a knowledgeable and vibrant appreciation of the art of cinema and its power to unite, inform and transform individuals and communities.

Our mission is accomplished through the exhibition of the very best of new local, domestic, and international independent films that are otherwise largely inaccessible to audiences throughout the region. The notable award-winning films we showcase represent an impressive range of stories and experiences. Screenings are often enriched by conversations with filmmakers and experts on an array of topics, providing our audiences the opportunity to share transformative cinematic experiences.

Our mission is carried out through year-round programming of independent releases from around the globe; the annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival - the largest international arts event in the region presenting 250+ films representing more than 100 cultures and countries each year to a diverse audience of 50,000; the annual Cine Latino MSP Film Festival - the Upper Midwest's only showcase of new Latin American and Iberian cinema celebrating 10 years in 2022; and other film programs such as We the People: Required Watching, an ongoing series of films that powerfully speak to systemic inequality followed by community discussions with filmmakers and local leaders.

Founded in 1962, and celebrating our 60th anniversary in 2022!, the Film Society of Minneapolis St. Paul or MSP Film is Minnesota’s foremost film exhibition organization, and a 501(c)(3) non-profit. We bring the best of international independent film to Minnesota audiences through the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, numerous niche film festivals and series, and daily programming 365-days a year.
