High school is tough for everyone. It’s a period of transition, both academically and socially, when teens are making choices and forming relationships that will effect the rest of their lives. Whether it’s the struggle to fit in or pressure to succeed, inthe best of circumstances, teens today struggle so often with anxiety and depression and that hopeless feeling that the world isn’t getting better. Now imagine dealing with all those everyday pressures while living in your mom’s car or bouncing around from sofa to sofa, hoping no one notices that you don’t have a home to go back to. How can you think of your biology homework, let alone college or technical school or learning a trade, when you’re spending most of the day figuring out where you’ll sleep tonight?
Every night in Minnesota, nearly 5,000 youth are experiencing homelessness, many of them right here in the West metro. It’s a hidden epidemic because most of these youth have learned to hide their living conditions as a survival mechanism to keep themselves safe, to keep their parents from getting in trouble, or to keep their siblings together. At MoveFwd, we refuse to be silent about youth homelessness, the lives it costs, and the futures it puts in peril. We are creating solutions that offer unhoused young people paths to stable housing, significant rental supports, and wrap around case management that lays the groundwork for a successful future. MoveFwd’s programming includes:
Drop-in Center: Located in the Eisenhower Community Center, our Drop-in Center is open Monday-Thursday from9:00AM -5:00PM to any young person in need of assistance. Our case managers are on site to walk youth through housing options, aid in employment and housing searches, offer food and hygiene products, and provide referrals to other resources.
Outreach Case Management: We bring our case management services into the schools and communities to ensure all youth have access. Our outreach case managers are specially trained to work with youth who are experiencing homelessness and may be reluctant to access more intensive services. Building a trusting relationship with an outreach worker is many times the first step in helping the start a journey toward stable housing and healing.
Transitional Living Program: Qualified youth ages 18 to 24 are provided intensive housing case management services, including assistance locating a market rate or subsidized apartment in the community, first month’s rent and security deposit, tenant’s rights and responsibilities training, and landlord negotiation. In addition to rental assistance, our case managers work with youth for up to two years as they progress on their goal plan towards long term housing stability.
Low Barrier Individual Therapy: The cornerstone of all of our programming is free, barrier-free individual therapy provided to participants by a licensed mental health provider for as long as they need it. No questions asked. Therapy is the bedrock of healing.
MoveFwd is on a mission to ensure that every teen and young adult is safely housed and working towards their educational and life goals.
