The purpose of this nonprofit organization is to fund programs for leadership and professional development across the Minnesota Library Community. The organization is explicitly committed to expanding equity and inclusion in the library community. It is an affiliate charitable organization to the Minnesota Library Association and works with other partners and allies.

MILE - Minnesota Institute for Leadership Excellence - MLF has been the primary funder for MILE since its inception in 2005, with over 200 library staff participating in the past 20 years.

Minnesota Library Foundation Scholarships - MLF encourages career development by funding a scholarship for a Minnesota library staff worker to grow professionally through taking college or university courses that would lead to acquiring a degree or certificate in the library field. The scholarship fund was created and awarded its first grants in 2025.

Minnesota Author Project - The Minnesota Library Foundation joins with Biblioboard in providing prizes for the Minnesota Author Project, an annual contest that recognizes the best indie-published authors in Minnesota.
