MBC was formed in 2006 by a group of volunteers seeking to improve the health of babies, families and communities through promoting and supporting breastfeeding. The coalition works to create environments that make it easier for women to breastfeed. More information about MBC’s goals and projects can be found on the MBC website at www.mnbreastfeedingcoalition.org.
MBC has demonstrated that it can accomplish a lot with a small amount of funding, including supporting local breastfeeding coalitions, conducting workshops for hospitals to share information and resources, holding statewide annual meetings, and hosting summits for hospital leadership to provide information on how to better support the 90% of families who choose to breastfeed in Minnesota. We have some great opportunities to impact breastfeeding in Minnesota that are currently on the back burner for lack of funding.
"Lactation consultants are so very important because many mothers do not have the support they need to breastfeed. I believe if every hospital had a lactation consultant on staff to help support new mothers, more of them would successfully breastfeed. Please keep lactation consultants in hospitals and clinics."
Minnesota Breastfeeding Coalition also supports local, cultural, and regional coalitions in developing lactation-friendly spaces so families don't need to choose between optimal feeding and going back to work or school.
"Thank you to the MN Breastfeeding Coalition for your financial support in making this project a reality here in Le Sueur County. We thank you for your assistance in establishing a lactation support program in Le Sueur County that will promote breastfeeding for our employees and also for the many visitors and clients that we serve. THANK YOU!!" Le Sueur County Public Health

Comments about the importance of breastfeeding support for individual families and clinical care by lactation experts:
"You can't put a price on making someone feel like an amazing parent who is able to supply a baby with the nursing we were made to do!"
Minnesota Breastfeeding Coalition offers Seed Money grants to MBC member coalitions to advance local projects supporting chest/breastfeeding families, create lactation-friendly environments, help normalize breastfeeding, reduce the disparities in breastfeeding rates, and make sure all families can reach breastfeeding goals.
