🐾 About Us — Mending Spirits Animal Rescue

Mending Spirits Animal Rescue (MSAR) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) 100% volunteer-run, foster-based animal rescuelocated in Mankato, Minnesota. We proudly serve communities throughout Minnesota and across the United States, providing hope and healing to animals in need.

Our Story

Founded in October 2013, MSAR has grown into one of southern Minnesota’s largest all-animal rescue organizations. With a team of more than 300 dedicated volunteers, we have successfully rescued and rehomed over 5,000 animals representing nearly 30 different species — from dogs, cats, and rabbits to reptiles, birds, and farm animals.

What Makes Us Different

MSAR is not a shelter — we are a network of loving foster homes. Each animal in our care lives in a safe, nurturing environment where they receive individualized love, attention, and medical care until they find their forever home.

At any given time, we care for over 250 animals, ensuring every one of them has access to:

• Spay or neuter surgery

• Distemper and rabies vaccinations and boosters

• Deworming treatments

• Heartworm testing and prevention (treatment if positive)

• Microchip implantation

• FeLV testing and supportive care (if positive)

• Monthly heartworm, flea, and tick preventatives

• Dental care and orthopedic surgery when needed

• Food, treats, and nutritional supplements

• Supplies for our fosters — food, crates, bedding, litter, toys, leashes, and collars

• Access to free behavioral training and support

Our Commitment

Veterinary care represents our organization’s most significant financial commitment. In 2024, MSAR allocated over $126,000 to veterinary expenses, and in 2025, expenditures have already exceeded $100,000. These funds ensure that every animal we rescue receives the comprehensive medical attention they need to heal and thrive.

Our Mission

We are committed to rescuing animals from:

• Animal impound and high-kill facilities

• Owner surrenders

• Cruelty and neglect cases

• Stray and abandoned situations

• Puppy mills and overpopulation cases

We work tirelessly to place each rescued animal into a well-paired, permanent home and to educate our community about responsible pet ownership, affordable spay/neuter services, behavioral management, and proper preventative care. At Mending Spirits, we don’t just rescue animals — we support people, too. We educate and advocate for responsible pet care, help families keep their pets at home, and provide guidance on affordable spay/neuter options, training, and preventative health care. Together, we’re building a stronger, more compassionate community for both animals and the people who love them.
