Improving our community by reuniting the lost and advocating for the unwanted.

The Marshmallow Foundation was set up in honor of ‘Hot Cocoa’ and her ‘Eleven Marshmallows’.   Cocoa was a Lab mom who had been abandoned and locked in a house for three weeks. Rescued by an Iowan Sheriff and obviously pregnant, she was taken to a local Vet. After receiving donated medical care and through the generosity and compassion of many, Cocoa came to rest in Minnesota at the Livingston Wiedewitsch home.  She went on to whelp an astonishing 11 puppies. Cocoa and each of her puppies were adopted into loving homes; but there are many more that need our help.

The need to reduce the problem of unwanted companion animals and to care for those in our area gave rise to Marshmallow Animal Shelter. Please support us in obtaining our goal in whatever way you can, whether through financial contributions, donations of your time or unneeded pet-care items, or simply by promoting the importance of spaying and neutering our four-legged friends.

The Marshmallow Foundation is located in Detroit Lakes, MN and serves as pound for:

  • Audubon
  • Callaway
  • Detroit Lakess
  • Frazee
  • Lake Park
  • Mahnomen
  • Wauban
  • Becker County

First and Foremost, we are a “low kill” shelter.  This is very important to all of us and we believe in it with all of our hearts.  The animals that are brought to us as “strays” are held for five (5) business days.  After that hold period is up, we then get them the necessary vet care needed to be adoptable .  We want to give animals a second chance at finding new homes so we chose to have a policy where we only euthanize if there are extenuating circumstances, such as health or friendliness.  We do our very best to not give up on any animal brought to our doorstep! Because we are committed to caring for these animals until we can find them appropriate homes, many are with us for a very lengthy period.

On average, we have 70 cats and 20 dogs to care for while they wait to find new homes and families.

We do not give them time limits. But to do this requires support from our public.

In addition to finding homes for these pets, Marshmallow Animal Shelter also works closely with local and regional service dog training programs and police departments. We are proud to have had several shelter dogs go on to help people or places in need! The staff and volunteers of the Marshmallow Foundation work hard every single day providing for the animals that have no other place to go. They do this because it is in their heart and it feeds their soul.

Help them continue to care for these pets in need and provide a safe haven for them until they find new families and homes.  Please consider making a donation to ensure that these animals have someplace to go when they need it most.  Thank you!
