Longfellow/Seward Healthy Seniors Program

Our mission: To enable community seniors to live healthy, independent and socially connected lives.

Started in 1994 by a group of local seniors, Longfellow/Seward Healthy seniors serves over 600 local seniors annually by providing support services and various programs. 

• "Nurse is In" / Blood Pressure Clinics at nine community locations
• In-home community nursing visits
• Monthly Senior Social/Health Talks 
• Diabetes Support Group 
• Art therapy classes 
• Tai Chi for Health exercise classes 
• Technology Clinics to help seniors with their technology & to stay connected
• Caregiver support and education 
• Rapid Screen assessments 
• Foot / home care services
• Information, referrals and advocacy for securing services

Volunteer-provided services such as 

• Blood Pressure Clinics at Becketwood Apartments
• "Friendly Visitor" volunteers for isolated seniors
• Help with shopping and transportation 
• Transportation to local medical appointments (limited)

A Longfellow/Seward Healthy Seniors Story:

Peggy is over ninety years old and has lived in Minneapolis all her life.  Healthy Seniors provided support and respite for her while she was taking care of her ailing husband.  Peggy is outgoing and joyful, and enjoys writing poetry and drawing.  We provide two "Friendly Visitor" volunteers who visit Peggy, one of whom plays Scrabble with her.  We also provide her with occasional rides.  She enjoys participating in our Senior Social / Health Talks and our art classes.

Through your donation we are able to build neighborhood and volunteer support systems for seniors that rely on human, one-to-one relationships and services, uniquely designed for each individual's needs.
