Our mission is to "empower and inspire effective change in the minds, bodies, and spirits of young people." The youth of the St. Paul metro area get involved with JKM for the enjoyment of the program, but they stay for the meaningful experiences.
Our kids talk about the changes that they’ve made as a result of being in the program. They learn how to take care of their bodies inside and out through sports training and healthy living activities. We even teach them how to prepare healthy meals and snacks.
Kids who get tossed aside by society come to JKM and find mentors who can help them see the best of what they have to offer the world, who care, who see their potential. The kids see their latent leadership skills form and rise to the surface as they participate in activities proven by research to be effective, proven by kids to be fun.
Middle and high school aged youth practice living out the
values-driven skills they acquire through the program. They experience the
transformation of going from gossips to graduates, hot-heads to heroes and under-achievers
to overcomers. The "me first" mentality turns into a community minded mindset as the kids learn to identify, design and implement community service projects for the communities in which they live.
Our mentors and those who work with the program embody the qualities we nurture in the youth we serve. We help the kids see and develop a sense of hope in their ability to positively direct their own futures by adopting and living out values that will create proactive change.
JKM provides programming in four areas:
1. Life Skills and Career Development – Teens learn how academics, higher education, trade awareness and career preparation fit into their formula for success. JKM brings this information to the kids who need it most but are least likely to get it from traditional settings.
2. Healthy Living – JKM participants are shown how to develop and use skills, techniques and tools to educate themselves on healthy relationships, body image, injury prevention and overall healthy living.
3. Sports Team Leadership Training –
Our society is sports-focused but the emphasis is on competition and winning.
JKM serves to develop athletic leaders of integrity who are respected for their
abilities to be effective team leaders on and off the playing fields whether
victors or not. They learn to put the emphasis on integrity, fair play and humbleness.
4. The Movement/Group Mentoring – The youth in the JK Movement are encouraged to be physically fit and front-runners in athletics. At the same time, academic excellence along with personal accountability is of utmost importance in preparing them to be people of influence. To this end, JKM is committed to assisting students to improve overall academic achievement, attendance and behavior. Our volunteer mentors represent multi-faceted professions and careers and they are dedicated to building one-on-one, supportive, trusting, caring relationships with JKM scholars. One person can make a huge difference in the life of a child. Our mentors strive to be that person in their scholar’s life.
Established in 2011, The JK Movement is the brainchild of founder and visionary, Johnny Allen, Jr. Born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, Johnny graduated from Highland Park High School and went on to receive a B.A. in Business from the University of St. Thomas. With his tenacity and personal dedication and commitment to improving the lives of youth, he has brought JKM successfully from its first year of programming to where it is today.
