Making a Real Difference
Worsening health issues and a recent surgery had made home maintenance nearly impossible for Easter. Rotting siding, drastically overgrown landscaping, and holes in the roof presented a growing and constant worry for her, so she took a chance and sent in her application.
"When I got the letter saying ‘Congratulations,’ I was so happy!" Easter recalled. She proudly showed off the fresh coating of paint on the porch walls and marveled at how beautiful her rock garden now looked. "It’s a beautiful experience!" she said, smiling. Then she winked at the Hearts & Hammers sign in her front yard and added, "Can I keep the yard sign up forever?" Anyone could see from her smile that the cloud of worry hanging over Easter’s head had lifted. "It’s been a great day," she said— again.
How the Home Was Transformed
Hearts & Hammers volunteers fixed the rotted siding on Easter’s garage. Her roof was deteriorating and full of holes, which Hearts & Hammers is usually unable to address, but the team was determined to find a contractor, who was able to come and take care of it. "They just came out and did it, right in the rain!" Easter marveled. Volunteers painted Easter’s garage and house, repaired her cracked walkway, and tackled her landscaping. They removed all of the weeds and overgrown shrubs and bushes in Easter’s charming rock garden, even clearing some weeds "the size of trees." Easter was impressed with the volunteers’ attention to detail: "They even bought a new number for my door. Did you see it? It looks really nice and really clear. They even swept my sidewalk and watered all the new flowers. You made a real difference for me."
