The Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter is passionately devoted to the care of animals in need, by providing rescue, shelter, adoption, and veterinary services in central Minnesota.

Since 1999 we have helped over 9,800 cats and dogs.

As an independent animal welfare organization, HMAS does not receive funding from any national, state, county or municipal entity. We rely solely on generous donations and adoption fees to support our ongoing mission!

Averaging about 500 intakes each year, the Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter is excited to be in the final phase of finishing our brand new dog facility. With this building, we are able to house more dogs at a time, allowing us to help more families and dogs in need.

The new dog facility is now located on the same property as our cat shelter, which will places all of our animals in one easy to find location!

We are thankful to have amazing supporters that helped make this new facility a possibility and also continue to support us in our general operations.

PONDERINGS FROM FALL 2025...

The year continues to go well - we’ve taken in 502 cats and dogs so far.  The shelter’s dogs have moved to their new home at our property west of Hutchinson!  There are a number of outside areas and projects that we will need to finish in the spring, but we’ve beat the snow and everyone seems to be settling in well.    It is great to have all our volunteers and projects back together in one place again - it was almost exactly 5 years ago that we moved the shelter’s cats.   The dogs have certainly brought a new level of energy and excitement to the property, and it is great to see them enjoying their larger indoor/outdoor kennels and walking trails we’ve created.  We had a great turn out for our open house the afternoon of November 15th - it was great to see everyone!  In other news our spring pet walk went well and our monthly rummage sales and nail trim clinics continue to be popular.  We lost a dozen trees during this summer’s storms, but after lots of hard work by volunteers walking trails were reopened and most of the damage has been cleared.  We’re also excited to have started in-house spay/neuter operations in the past few weeks - as veterinarian costs have increased sharply these past years moving to an in-house model has been a focus.   The up-front capital expenses for equipment have been considerable but should pay for themselves quickly and will help us control costs going forward so we can help as many animals as possible each year.

VOLUNTEERS...
We can always use more help. If you are interested in volunteering, please stop by our facilities during adoption hours and fill out a volunteer application. If you have a talent, we can use it...if you don't want to work directly with the animals, we have plenty of behind-the-scenes projects available too.

HAPPY ENDINGS...

Harlow, one of our longest feline residents, was adopted and featured in a Newsweek article - https://www.newsweek.com/cat-spends-363-days-shelter-before-getting-adopted-1989018. Your donation helps us provide happy endings for all of our residents - canine or feline.

ADOPT A NEW FRIEND...

Through a partnership with PetSmart of Hutchinson, we now have cats available for adoption 7 days a week at their store. Please visit PetSmart to find your new feline friend. Alternatively, we have dogs and cats available during our adoptions hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays 5-7pm and Saturdays 1-5pm. You'll find a list of available animals on our website.
