A Legacy of Innovation

Our founder, Margaret Hamm Kelley, was ahead of her time. A social worker and granddaughter of renowned St. Paul leader Theodore Hamm, she recognized that mental illness was a serious problem … especially for those unable to afford care. In 1954, Margaret established Hamm Clinic. She gathered a team of clinical social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists to provide integrated mental health care to individuals who could not pay for treatment. She also fought against the stigma of mental illness. Her motto was: Comprehensive mental health care is a basic human right that should be accessible to everyone.

We have carried her vision forward to this day by continuing to offer forward-thinking programming that is responsive to the mental health needs of the community.

Client Services

Integrative Mental Health Care: Now Offering Case Management

Since our founding, the care at Hamm has been focused on providing relational care in the context of our client's culture's and lived experiences. We know the importance of accessing housing, employment, clothing, and other supports to our client's mental health and well-being. This year we launched case management services - because we know safety and stability are foundational. Case managers work as part of our care team with therapy, evaluation, psychiatry, and nursing!

Donate to support the growth of our Case Management Services, ensuring our client's can navigate complex systems and have their basic needs met!

New Asylum Evaluation Services & Mental Health Screening for Afghan Refugees

This summer Hamm Clinic opened services to Asylum seekers. Asylum seekers often have limited access to mental health assessments and care, despite their extensive histories of trauma and persecution. Accessing low cost legal and health care that supports individuals through the asylum process is essential for accessing safety. Financial constraints, language barriers, and fear often keep asylum seekers from accessing the help they need. Hamm Clinic now offers documentation for U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that describes the psychological impact of trauma on individuals seeking asylum.

As a result of this work, Hamm Clinic therapists have been asked to provide mental health screening, crisis intervention, and immediate referral to ongoing care to newly arrived Afghan refugees! Through a collaboration with the University of Minnesota Medical Reserve Corps our team is working to ensure immediate screening and smooth referral to mental health services in the community.

Help us ensure that asylum seekers and Afghan refugees who have fled their homes for fear of persecution can seek safety and access needed mental health services!

Groups for Health Care Professionals

The COVID-19 pandemic is having an enormous impact on the mental health of our community, with even higher rates of mental health concerns in front-line workers and healthcare professionals. We see firsthand every day the healing and support uniquely offered in group therapy services, so we have created a group program to support the wellbeing of our community's doctors, nurses, EMTs, and others who have been working hard to keep us all safe. The group focuses on discussing the effects of the pandemic and healthcare worker's experiences of burnout, grief, and trauma.

Your donation will help Health Care Professionals access of high quality mental health care and group support as they recover from the effects of the COVID-10 Pandemic!

We hope you will consider supporting Hamm Clinic on Give to the Max Day so we can continue offering innovative mental health services to the community!
