At Hamm Clinic, we believe in one simple truth: everybody is deserving. Deserving of care. Deserving of compassion. Deserving of the chance to heal, no matter their story, background, or financial situation.

For over 70 years, we’ve carried forward the vision of our founder, Margaret Hamm Kelley, who believed that comprehensive mental health care is a basic human right. What began as a small team of social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists in 1954 has grown into a thriving community that provides culturally responsive, trauma-informed mental health services to adults who might otherwise be left without help.

Today, through our Healing Together™ Model of Care, we offer individual, family, and group therapy, case management, nursing, and psychiatric care — all under one roof. But at the heart of it all are the stories, stories of people like Maria.

A Legacy of Innovation 

Our founder, Margaret Hamm Kelley, was ahead of her time. A social worker and granddaughter of renowned St. Paul leader Theodore Hamm, she recognized that mental illness was a serious problem … especially for those unable to afford care. In 1954, Margaret established Hamm Clinic. She gathered a team of clinical social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists to provide integrated mental health care to individuals who could not pay for treatment. She also fought against the stigma of mental illness. Her motto was: Comprehensive mental health care is a basic human right that should be accessible to everyone.

We have carried her vision forward to this day by continuing to offer forward-thinking programming that is responsive to the mental health needs of the community.

A Story of Healing, Hope, and Community

When Maria* came to Hamm Clinic, she was in crisis

Maria recalls her first session vividly:

“It was the first time I told my story and felt seen. My therapist didn’t just listen — she helped me believe I was more than what happened to me. Hamm Clinic gave me back my voice.”

Maria’s care didn’t end there. Our Care Coordination team worked closely with her therapist and case manager to connect her with housing resources and access to ongoing therapy groups. Through Group Therapy, Maria found a community of others who understood her pain and resilience. Today, she is rebuilding her life, one hopeful step at a time.
