We are a K-8 grade non-sectarian, independent, coeducational, preparatory day school with its campus in Deephaven, Minnnesota. Our academic curriculum features Core Knowledge and Saxon Math.
We are differentiated by a commitment to small class sizes and personal attention. Beyond the personalization and individuality the small class size facilitates, our mixed age approach also creates an organic ability grouping. Every child in the school is properly challenged according to their ability and as a result students stay engaged in their work and develop a true love of learning.
When students are properly challenged, when their learning experiences are engaging and meaningful, when they are valued for their own contributions and gifts, when they feel safe, cared for, known, and respected, it is then that they are free to transcend conventional expectations. The attention to detail and the conscious awareness and intention brought to every aspect of the program supports the children academically, socio-emotionally, and physically. When all these areas are in balance, the whole student can get the most out of their education experience.
This education experience is not easily attained, and small classes with dedicated teachers are not enough. Facilities, academic curricula, social curricula, and sustainable funding are all important tangible aspects that must reach a level of quality that can reflect the philosophic intentions.
Academically, Deephaven Academy has achieved a quality curriculum by adopting and understanding the Core Knowledge Education Program. The Core Knowledge Foundation was created by E.D. Hirsch Jr. in the mid 1980’s and is based on a simple and powerful idea: knowledge builds on knowledge. The more you know, the more you are able to learn. This insight, well established by cognitive science, has profound implications for teaching and learning. Nearly all of our most important goals for education – greater reading comprehension, the ability to think critically and solve problems, even higher test scores – are a function of the depth and breadth of our knowledge.
The mathematics program has been equally well developed along the Saxon Math philosophy. Saxon Math has a proven track record of success in every type of setting – urban, suburban, public, private, charter, and parochial. This success can be attributed to the program’s distinct, effective, and research-based pedagogy. Saxon’s approach breaks complex concepts into simpler increments that are continually reviewed as the complexity expands.
Another defining characteristic of Deephaven Academy is its status as a school-within-a-school. Deephaven Academy sub-leases space from the Church of St. Therese School. While this is a contemporary and collaborative relationship, the two schools are not otherwise affiliated. The shared school environment offers students the benefits of a small, private non-sectarian school plus the wonderful amenities of a larger, traditional school such as a library, computer lab, music room, playground and ball fields, full gymnasium, and a spacious cafeteria serving freshly prepared healthy hot lunches. From the perspective of a financial supporter, this efficient use of facilities speaks to the astute financial thoughtfulness of the Deephaven Academy and St. Therese School leadership and one of many examples of the direct use of all financial resources to benefit the students.
