This year marks a very special milestone - Great River Homes, Inc. is celebrating 50 years of service to individuals with disabilities and their families across Wabasha County. For half a century, we have been committed to providing person-centered services that empower people to live full, meaningful lives. As we reflect on this legacy, we are deeply grateful for your continued belief in our mission.

As we celebrate this achievement, we are also faced with growing challenges that threaten the sustainability of the services our community depends on. Despite our best efforts to operate efficiently, state and federal funding simply do not cover the true cost of care. The rates paid to providers like Great River Homes, Inc. are significantly underfunded and have not kept pace with the rising costs of living, insurance, retaining quality employees, and licensing requirements. These funding gaps force us to make difficult choices—and to rely on the generosity of people like you who believe in the importance of our mission.

Home, auto, and health insurance premiums continue to rise, which are all mandatory lines of coverage we cannot go without. This year, our DHS licensing fees have doubled, creating an additional strain on our already tight budget. Continuing to provide livable wages is critical to retaining dedicated and skilled employees who ensure the safety, dignity, and independence of those we support.

Transportation is another significant expense. With sixteen vehicles traveling throughout Wabasha County each day, we incur ongoing costs for fuel, maintenance, and insurance so people can attend work, medical appointments, and community events that are meaningful to them. In addition, we maintain eight homes, each requiring regular upkeep and repairs to remain safe, comfortable, and accessible for those who live there.

Investing in employee training to ensure we meet both licensing standards and individuals' needs, as well as prioritizing activities that enrich lives - like attending a Twins game, hosting our annual spring formal dance, and recognizing our hardworking employees all come with unfunded expenses. These experiences may not be fully covered by funding, but they are essential to fostering connection, inclusion, and joy for everyone involved.
