Our client Matt was born and raised in Buffalo, Minnesota. As longtime members of the community, Matt and his mother Helene thought they could count on their area school to support Matt as a transgender student.
But between 2015 and 2017, while Matt was attending Buffalo Community Middle School, he was repeatedly isolated from his classmates and limited to a single restroom facility no other student was required to use. It was so hard to access he often did not have time to use it between classes.
Matt was also required to use a separate, equally inaccessible locker room – which led him to being removed from physical education classes entirely. He faced all of this simply because he is transgender.
On Wednesday, June 30, along with co-counsel Best & Flanagan, we announced a major settlement with the Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose School District. This settlement is a HUGE win for Matt and Helene. It also represents continued progress for other transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming students in the school district, who will see significant changes to the district's policies as a result of the settlement.
