This year Gender Justice celebrates 15 years. Over the past decade and a half Gender Justice and our community have accomplished so much to be proud of, including landmark wins protecting abortion access in Doe v. Minnesota, affirming the dignity of trans inmates in Lusk v. Minnesota Department of Corrections, & just this autumn, asserting the right of trans athletes to compete without discrimination in Cooper v. USA Powerlifting.
No matter the political and societal landscape — including in uniquely scary and demanding moments like the one we face now — your support has empowered us to stay true to our belief that it is never the wrong time to fight for people’s rights. Together, we’re excited to keep moving forward towards our dream of a world where no one’s life is limited or defined by their gender.
Mudra v. Buffalo Wild Wings is a current case that exemplifies our mission. High schooler Gerika Mudra was just having a normal dinner out with a friend at a Buffalo Wild Wings in Owatonna — but when she got up to use the bathroom, a server followed her into the restroom and demanded she “prove” she was a girl. Scared, trapped, and humiliated, Gerika was forced to unzip her hoodie to show she had breasts.
When we announced this case in summer 2025, it struck a chord with people across Minnesota and the nation. What happened to Gerika wasn’t just wrong, it was illegal. It was also part of a dangerous trend — rooted in anti-trans hate, misogyny, and racism — that is leading to an increase in the public policing of people’s bodies and humanity. We’re proud to stand with Gerika and her family as they seek justice, not just for themselves, but to make public spaces safer for everyone.
By supporting Gender Justice, you empower us to fight for what is right in groundbreaking cases like this, as well as through our innovative advocacy and narrative work.
We know the road ahead will be full of challenges. We also know from our first 15 years that, together, we are up to the task. But none of this is possible without your support.
Together, we have the power to not only defend our wins, but further strengthen Minnesota’s commitment to safety, freedom, justice, and dignity for all.
