Disability Motivational Network (DMN) began in 2016 to assist children and adults with disabilities in Liberia. Stigmas toward people with disabilities, even children, are pervasive throughout Liberia. Through our efforts, we are trying to effect necessary change where adults and children with disabilities are seen as valuable participants in Liberia and their home communities.

As Liberians who have lived these circumstances. Now living in Minnesota, we have committed our lives toward improving lives of disabled children and adults in Liberia who don’t have the resources to meet their basic needs.

DMN is trying to effect change by meeting the critical needs of basic healthcare and education for children and adults with disabilities in Liberia. Because of the Liberian cultural norms of not valuing people with disabilities, people cannot get their healthcare or education needs met.

Most often, children with a disability are left at home, while their siblings go to school. Many days these children are sent in the streets to beg. Their existence leaves little hope for any future and continues the hopeless lifecycle for people with disabilities.

Take a moment to imagine a child of 8,10 or 12-years old begging and not having anything other than the small amount of money they receive to feed themselves. And, then often, going to bed hungry without any hope for improving their lives. This isolation and feeling of having no value need to change.

As we all know, people living with a disability can off many important contributions toward a healthy community. Think of the impact we can have by contributing resources toward changing minds and by valuing the children and adults living with a disability with the respect they deserve and the critical resources to meet their basic health and educational needs.

Disability Motivational Network Accomplishments

Since 2016, DMN has served over 5,000 underprivileged individuals living with disabilities, including kids, teens, young adults and elderly in the slums, villages, rural parts, and streets of Liberia. We have assisted over 1,000 abandoned and homeless children with disabilities and given them a safe place to call home. Additionally, DMN provides food, medicines, and other basic needs, for more than 2700 people with a disability.

In educational scholarship alone, DMN has funded approximately 125 people with disabilities with educational support in elementary, middle school, high school, vocational training and even college.

Recently, to help meet the healthcare crisis for people with disabilities, DMN completed a 21-rooms health care facility in Monrovia (Margibi County), Liberia. This has been a 2-years effort that DMN helped facilitate and fund with people on the ground in Liberia that work with us on the many initiatives we have begun.
