Compassionate Ocean is a center for studying and practicing meditation and mindfulness in the Zen Buddhist tradition.

Compassionate Ocean Zen Center is dedicated to the central practice of awakening. The activities of the Center cultivate awareness of the essential beauty and dignity of life coming from full engagement with life-as-it-is.

We envision Compassionate Ocean as a broad-minded and openhearted community, practicing in the Buddhist tradition, focused on the central activity of awakening. The guiding spirit is that ancient system of inquiry, awareness, and wisdom from which the practice of mindfulness comes, and which helps us to understand and realize the implications of mindfulness as a practice for the ending of suffering in our lives and the lives of all with whom we are interconnected.

Compassionate Ocean is named after Jikai Dainin Katagiri Roshi, the root teacher of our guiding teachers, Joen Snyder O'Neal and Michael O'Neal. Jikai, Compassionate Ocean, refers to reality itself, which always holds us and bathes us with compassion. Even though we may not be aware of it, even though we may be experiencing a lot of suffering, still we are held in the great ocean of Buddha's compassion.

The Center offers programs in Zen practice and study as well as programs in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).
A gift to Compassionate Ocean helps us to sustain and expand our programs and to bring the benefits of mindful living to the larger community.
