This year, we are fundraising to support our programs and services in St. Vincent and the Grenadines to combat COVID setbacks. Please help us continue our work in St. Vincent during this hard time.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) is the third poorest country in the Caribbean. This year has been especially hard for residents of St. Vincent due to travel restrictions put in place by COVID-19. Their main industry is tourism, which has ground to a halt. Secondly, many Vincentians work on hospitality cruise ships, meaning that many jobs are impacted when major cruise lines cancel into 2021. A country that was already poor to begin with is now facing more devastation.
There is a great need for psychotherapy and counseling services in St. Vincent. Many children are abandoned or abused and live in orphanages. Many are traumatized due to multiple impacts. There is one psychologist in the entire country, and there are too few counselors to meet the children's needs.
Anxiety is everywhere during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in a small country with high poverty rates.
Since 2017, Cedarbrook has been volunteering in SVG to help combat this need and put systems in place to provide ongoing support for children experiencing trauma. Your donation today can help us subsidize the cost of providing online support and counseling in St. Vincent and the Grenadines while we wait for COVID restrictions to lift.
Kinship Partners Mentor Training --online!
In February 2020, Cedarbrook Center was joined by Karen and David Downing of Kinship Partners to help train 15 SVG community members to mentor children and adolescents. Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, we cannot proceed with the in-person mentorship training and mental health services that we began in February. However, to adjust to pandemic circumstances, we are planning online training to help match children with local SVG mentors. The matching involves sensitive information, and we will need secure and encrypted video chat. This level of security does not come with the free versions of any online video conference system.
Your donation helps us provide these online services and subsidizes the cost of video collaboration tools.
Stephen Ministry Leadership training
Stephen Ministry Leadership Training is a program to train community members, teachers, counselors, and orphanage workers to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to children and teens who are hurting or have experienced trauma. We currently have the goal to provide 3 leaders in St. Vincent with this training. It is a week-long process that is best done in person. As soon as COVID restrictions allow, we want to move ahead with Leadership Training (SVG leaders come to the USA) paired with local training in SVG. We have $9,000 of the needed $13,000 to train 3 persons--we are close to our goal! However, COVID restrictions may increase the cost of this training if COVID concerns have not ended.
Your donation helps us bring St. Vincent leaders to the States (when safe to do so) for Leadership Training that they can bring back to their community.
COVID has also put Focus for Success and our work with children in Minneapolis on hold. Can you help jump start us so we're ready to go full speed ahead once children can be safe in school gatherings?
Thank you for supporting Cedarbrook Center! We would not be where we are today if it wasn't for our donor's generous support. You have truly made this work possible. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support and donations!
