"Inspiring Differently Abled Youth and Veterans"

Cast Outdoor Adventures Inc. is a veteran-owned 501(c)3 nonprofit in Ely, MN that provides experiences for differently abled youth and veterans in the pristine Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA). Cast Outdoor Adventures Inc. champions the idea that outdoor activities should be accessible to all. Our mission is clear: We believe that nature should be accessible to everyone, regardless of ability. That's why our Adaptive Adventure Programs offer individuals with physical or cognitive disabilities the opportunity to enjoy activities like fishing, hiking, camping, canoeing, and dogsledding in a supportive environment.

This “Give to the Max Day,” we at Cast Outdoor Adventures, Inc. are excited to launch a campaign to raise $5,000 by November 20 to support our year-round Adaptive Adventure Programs.

With your help, we can:

- Provide adaptive equipment for outdoor activities

- Train more volunteer guides experienced in adaptive recreation

- Expand our winter programming to ensure everyone can enjoy Minnesota’s snowy season safely and inclusively

How you can help:

1. Make a donation today on our non-profit web page

2. Share our GiveMN campaign with friends and family.

3. Encourage others to get outside and give back!

Every dollar brings us closer to ensuring that no one is left out of outdoor exploration. Early giving opens November 1!

Together, we can make the outdoors open to all — not just today, but all year long. Thank you for your support!

Together we can create a stronger and more inclusive Minnesota.

Please consider a generous donation to assist in our year-round adaptive outdoor programs. Funded programming will guarantee adaptive adventures for many years to come!

Thank you for considering our cause,

David & Heather Hicks

Want to know more about our Adaptive Adventure Programs? Read below to learn what inspired us to create Cast Outdoor Adventures Inc. and to hear directly from our past participants.

In 2018, Cast Outdoor Adventures Inc. partnered with the Boundary Waters Sled Hockey Combine to provide inclusive canoe adventures and leadership training for differently abled individuals who attend their 5-day camp. In addition to playing hockey, campers are guided into the beautiful BWCA by Cast Outdoor Adventures Inc. Together, participants take the 14-mile canoe trip including a ¾ mile portage without able-bodied assistance. All needs are met by innovative adaptations and skilled Cast Outdoor Adventure Inc. staff who are passionate about working with paraplegic and cognitively disabled athletes.

"I loved the scenery and the time spent outdoors."

In addition, Cast Outdoor Adventures Inc. is developing custom adaptive dog sleds that will provide a very unique opportunity not offered in any venue in North America. These sleds will allow the participants to drive a dog team in a wilderness environment and experience the ultimate culmination of man and animal working together to achieve a common goal.

Cast Outdoor Adventures Inc. serves over 1000 youth and upwards of 500 veterans in Minnesota’s disabled community.

By embracing barrier-free adventure, Cast Outdoor Adventures Inc. enriches the lives of differently abled individuals, fostering a world where the wonders of nature are within everyone’s reach. The adaptive canoe program fosters a sense of trust, pride, teamwork, leadership, and confidence in all the campers. Ultimately, Cast Outdoor Adventures Inc. believes the skills learned on the trip translate back into campers' everyday lives, making the wilderness trip an effective catalyst on the path to greater independence.

Spending time outdoors significantly benefits differently abled youth and veterans, enhancing their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Exposure to natural light and fresh air can improve mood, reduce stress, and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. Physical activities such as walking, wheeling, or participating in adapted sports can help enhance strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. Additionally, the social aspects of outdoor activities can combat feelings of isolation and promote a sense of community and inclusion. Outdoor environments often allow individuals with special abilities a feeling of empowerment and achievement.
