We need your help to keep moving forward this coming year! Alive & Kickin is more determined than ever to help combat the issue of senior isolation which is so deeply impacted by the current pandemic.
2020 has been a very financially challenging year for many. More specifically, the art industry, which provides us all so much enrichment, joy, and escapism has been particularly hit hard. Due to the pandemic and in order to keep our seniors and audience members safe, A&K had to cancel its 2020 Annual Show, Community Concerts, and our SingOUT! program all of which are critical to help sustain the financial viability of the organization.
But we are not without reason to celebrate, our Alive & Kickin cast of Rockin Seniors isn’t about to let a pandemic get in the way of living life and furthering our mission, even if the path forward looks a little bit different! The New Faces of Alive & Kickin shows what can be accomplished with a little bit of resilience and courage.
We are, after all, still Alive & Kickin!
“Where do we find the music when the singer doesn’t sing? Where do we find the music when the doorbell doesn’t ring? Where do we find the harmonies when no one sings along? Somewhere deep inside we just have to find our song!” Mary Kay Fortier Spalding, Cast Member
History of Alive & Kickin
Founded in 2010 by Director/Choreographer and multi Ivy award-winning theatre professional, Michael Matthew Ferrell, the organization gives seniors voice through music, performance and arts access programs. "We are breaking down stereo-types about what it means to grow older and completely redefining aging -- one rock concert at a time", said Ferrell. Alive & Kickin’s mission is to dig deep within our aging population and, with undaunted courage, re-write the rules for living a full life with the “pride of age” leading the way.
Alive & Kickin, each year, along with renowned Music Director, Jason Hansen, works to produce a new original production with a cast of people 60-99+ "years young".
"Alive & Kickin urgently reminds us that in a world of stratified assumptions, we can become bigger than ourselves. That is the finest aspiration of art and humanity." Graydon Royce, Retired Critic Star Tribune
Over the years, generous support from individual donors, funders and sponsors has allowed Alive & Kickin to expand well beyond the annual show. Now, reaching more than 6,000 people annually, the organization offers a variety of arts access programing for the community.
Neighbors Night Out brings 250 seniors with disabilities to the annual show at the Bloomington Center for the Arts. In 2017, an audience member, with tears in her eyes, said “I wait for this night all year.”
SingOUT!, a FREE monthly singing program, welcomes hundreds of participants of all abilities each year-- building community and joy through song and friendship.
Alive & Kickin programs are made possible by individual donors. Financial support allows us to continue to give seniors a voice, break down stereotypes and build stronger communities. PLEASE JOIN US!
Thank you for your generosity!
With enormous gratitude,
Michael Matthew Ferrell and the entire Alive & Kickin Team
