Benefits of Playing Softball at RCTC

1. College Education

The primary reason for attending college is to get an education, but imagine doing that while playing the sport you love! At RCTC, players have support academically and athletically providing the opportunity to play softball and study.

2. Academic Success and Support Services

Overall, college student-athletes graduate at rates higher than college students in general. At RCTC, student-athletes receive academic support, such as state-of-the-art technology and tutoring, and have access to athlete-focused academic advisors in addition to traditional academic advisors.

3. Elite Training Opportunities

RCTC Softball has regular access to top-notch coaching and facilities. The partnership by RCTC/MNSCU, the Parks Department and RYFSA has delivered a fastpitch complex that the RCTC Yellowjackets are proud to call home. The team spends its outdoor season on the Championship Field. During the indoor season, the Yellowjackets have access to batting cages and the space of 4 courts in the Regional Sports Center and have priority hours reserved in the Regional Sports Stadium (dome), allowing the team to not just practice, but also host two pre-season tournaments and non-conference games each year.

4. Healthy Living

RCTC Softball provides team meals during team study table once a week. Each season, a nutritionist meets with the team to talk through building a “Performance Plate”, eating healthy on a budget and meal prep ideas. The team also is introduced to the support services offered by RCTC Student Health Services. Optimal personal and academic growth can best be achieved when physical and emotional needs are met. RCTC’s goal is to help students meet their unique health and wellness needs through various medical and mental health care and health education services.

5. Spring Training Travel

Competing at the top level of play requires traveling south over spring break to warmer weather, Traveling is a great opportunity to see and learn new things, meet new people and broaden views. Historically, RCTC Softball has traveled to Myrtle Beach to compete over spring break. This March, we are heading to Tucson, AZ to compete in the Tucson Invitational Games.

6. Exposure and Experiences

There are many new experiences once in college, especially as a student-athlete. Student-athletes are in a better position than other students because they represent the school and that has its benefits. College is not just about education and sports, it is also the time in life when you have the ability to connect with and be exposed to other communities and cultures. It is also time to enjoy the experience and challenge yourself to grow.

7. Relationships

At the top of the list of benefits from playing college sports, are relationships. Building and maintaining relationships is an extremely important skill athletes have. Those relationships are ones that will continue after playing softball for RCTC. The relationships players build with teammates, coaches, administrative staff, and professors are those who give references on resumes, and help with job opportunities.

 8. Preparation for Life

When competing in college sports, student-athletes learn important skills, like leadership, time management and how to effectively work with others toward a common goal. As freshmen, college athletes are thrown into a situation where they have to learn these traits almost immediately or they won’t make it. There is no better place to learn the skills of time management, selflessness and leadership than being a collegiate athlete.  Also, winning with respect, losing with dignity and learning from both are lessons that last a lifetime. Companies have specifically said that they seek to hire former student-athletes, because of these skills.
