When I joined Rochester Civic Theatre six months ago, I did it because I believe, deeply, in the power of theatre to bring people together.
I’ve spent my life surrounded by stories, and I’ve seen how the arts can change a community. Theatre teaches empathy, courage, and connection. Stories remind us that even in uncertain times, we can still gather, listen, laugh, and see one another.
That’s what drew me to RCT. This theatre has been a cornerstone of Rochester’s creative life for almost 75 years. This cultural hub has weathers storms and celebrated major milestones, all because of the people who dedicated their time, talents and hard work. Behind every production are volunteers, artists, families, and dreamers who make the stories on our stage shine.
But as I’ve learned these past few months, that magic doesn’t sustain itself easily. We’ve faced some unexpected challenges — from third-party ticket scammers selling overpriced tickets, to a noticeable dip in donations as families tighten budgets. Each of those hits hard for a community theatre that depends on local support to continue our mission.
Still, I see hope here every single day. I see it in the laughter echoing from our youth classes, where confidence is learned alongside choreography. I see it in our audiences, who still gasp, cheer, and tear up, reminding me that shared joy is one of the most radical acts of community there is. And I see it in the quiet moments, when a volunteer paints a set, when a parent beams from the back row, when a patron says, “This production needs to be seen.”
That’s why I’m asking for your support this GiveMN season. Your donation, no matter the size, helps us do more than produce plays. It helps us build empathy. It keeps opportunities for young artists within reach. It preserves a space where our community can come together, especially when the world outside feels divided, heavy, or just plain hard.
When the lights go up and the curtain rises, it’s not just a show — it’s us. It’s Rochester taking a bow.
So, if you love this theatre, this community, and the shared stories that connect us, please step into the spotlight with us. Support Rochester Civic Theatre through GiveMN today, and help us keep that light shining bright for generations to come.
With gratitude and hope,
