What happens when an old tractor wheel is no longer seen simply as an old tractor wheel?
It becomes a circle.
A line.
A texture.
A form.
A possibility.
Art on the Pathway is a contemporary public art project in Bigfork, Minnesota, led by artist Barbara Roche.
Through sculpture, reclaimed historic materials, natural elements, sound, and community participation, Art on the Pathway will transform the Bigfork Pathway into a place for discovery.
The project begins with objects and materials that already carry a history. Farming equipment. Logging tools. Weathered wood. Everyday objects that once had a specific purpose.
Rather than treating these materials simply as relics of the past, Barbara asks:
WHAT CAN THEY BECOME?
Through the artistic process, familiar objects enter new relationships. A wheel becomes form. A discarded material becomes sculpture. The landscape becomes part of the artwork. And a walk along the pathway becomes an opportunity to experience something differently.
ART + STUDENTS + COMMUNITY
Art on the Pathway is also an invitation to participate.
Students will encounter ideas and approaches from twentieth- and twenty-first-century art through experimentation, observation, and making.
Community members are contributing materials, knowledge, local stories, and connections that help root the project in Bigfork and the surrounding region.
The result is more than an outdoor exhibition. It is an encounter between art, history, landscape, people, and possibility.
