For over 50 years, the Nicollet County Historical Society has preserved, protected, and shared with people of all ages the beauty and history of the E. St. Julien Cox House.

Our ongoing “Keep the Cox House Standing” campaign helps fund the preservation and maintenance of our stunning gothic cottage. Yellow and red house with scaffolding in front of it with a man repairing a second story window.

Historic preservation is a constant process; with your help, we can keep the doors open for many future generations.

Immediate needs include

  • Continuing porch restoration
  • Storm window repairs
  • Roof repairs and maintenance
  • Ongoing garden and landscaping overhaul

Please help us “Keep the Cox House Standing” with a donation today.

Thank you in advance for your generous support. Only through the generosity and commitment of donors such as you can the Nicollet County Historical Society gather, preserve, and share our history for present and future generations.

ABOUT THE HOUSE:

The E. St. Julien Cox House was built in 1871 by St. Peter’s first Mayor, Eugene St. Julien Cox, and his wife, Mariah. The home was donated to Nicollet County Historical Society in 1968 and restored before it was reopened to the public as a house museum in 1971. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in November 1970.

The Cox House is a prime example of a Carpenter Gothic-Italianate Cottage, a combination of styles that were all the rage in the latter half of the nineteenth century in the cities of the American East but would have stood out for its exuberance and style in 1870s pioneer Minnesota. Unfortunately, it is one of the last of its kind in Minnesota.
