Lisa and I (well, mostly Lisa) are geeks about broomball. As geeks, we know that there is nothing more effective than a team with nerd-like focus on a collective goal. This Give to the Max Day we are supporting the awesome geeks at Prepare + Prosper, who nerd out about financial literacy and economic empowerment.

And this year, P+P have been major nerds about figuring out how to safely deliver essential preparation tax services and financial coaching during a pandemic!  Given the financial impact of COVID-19 on low-income households, their services are more critical than ever.

Prepare + Prosper and its volunteers work with low- to moderate-income people to build financial well-being through free tax preparation and financial services, products and coaching, and by changing systems to create economic opportunity.

Each year with the help of 550+ volunteers, Prepare + Prosper serves nearly 13,000 people and returns $25 million in tax refunds.

Personally, Lisa and I believe that there is no substitute for Prepare + Prosper.   As someone who works in the affordable housing field, I see that the hardest working folks among us often have the least opportunity to build wealth and a personal safety net. Many financial and credit services either exclude people with limited incomes or prey upon them. Without savings or access to low-cost credit, many people are one unexpected expense or a short-term layoff away from losing their home. The stellar staff and volunteers at P+P are building legitimate pathways for folks to accumulate the savings and credit history necessary to prevent a minor financial setback from cascading into financial catastrophe.
