In the Spring of 2020, after cancelling our season due to the pandemic, we began to think about how theater could have (even) more of an impact in our community. The pandemic’s shutdown had us thinking about what is truly essential, and the murder of George Floyd left us wondering how we could better support Black and Brown folks in our community.

At Renegade, we believe storytelling can open hearts and minds and change policies and systems. This is how the Duluth Story Project came to be. Over the last year and a half, Renegade has been using a healing based approach to gather stories about historically underrepresented community members’ (specifically BIPOC, elders, and LGBTQIA+) stories of navigating the pandemic and the social unrest of our current time.

In the Spring of 2022, these stories will be formulated into a play performed by local and professional artists. This project was created to not only promote healing in our community, but to show those with power and influence what the lived experiences of marginalized people in our neighborhoods look like and inspire them to create concrete change.

The process so far has been transformative for everyone involved. Please consider contributing to this powerful display of art and change in our community.
