A smile. A smile can be all it takes to make a new friend. To cheer someone up. To offer hope. To show that you care. To open up.
This July, we're asking you to do more than just smile. Take it a step further. I will be taking 60,000 steps (30 miles), plus 30 miles on bike, and I'm asking you to take just one step (literally a click of your mouse, not even picking up your feet), to support Karen refugee youth in Minnesota.
The Karen are a ethnic group from Burma who have been dealing with the traumas of war for almost 70 years. Minnesota is currently home to more than 17,000 Karen and other refugees from Burma who were forced to flee their beautiful homeland, and have found refuge here.
At the Karen Organization of Minnesota (KOM), the first social service agency in the U.S. started by and for refugees from Burma, we want to provide our community with not only resources, but also opportunities to enhance the skills that many already have, learn new skills, and provide space for them to thrive.
KOM's Youth Program does just that. In the afterschool program, we provide leadership training, mental, physical and emotional health classes, support in adjusting to life in the U.S., academic support, and cultural preservation. The students are able to learn traditional Karen weaving from women in KOM's weaving circle, and the Youth Development Coordinators also teach them traditional Karen dances that they perform at various events around the Twin Cities.
But we can't do this on our own. We need your support. The youth need your support. All you have to do is support me in my 60 mile challenge by giving a contribution of your choosing. All of your donations will go directly to KOM's Youth Program.
Thank you so much for supporting these youth and for helping build their futures.
