Our Mission: To build a better Minnesota by connecting people with the ideas and stories that strengthen our communities.
Our Vision: To create the leading model for local news in America – to drive innovation in media to make every Minnesotan’s life better.
Across the country, local news sources are vanishing. In the last 10 years, Minnesota has lost 34% of local newspapers and 64% of newspaper journalists.
Building on an extraordinary 158-year legacy that includes seven Pulitzer Prize awards, the Star Tribune is a force for journalistic excellence in Minnesota. Still, we are not immune to the financial challenges our colleagues face; our team has gone from 400 journalists 20 years ago to 215 journalists today.
Local journalism is the lifeblood to any community. It connects us. It gives us the information we need to navigate our daily lives – and to make a positive impact on the world around us. Star Tribune is locally owned and actively building a stable foundation of revenue through the generosity of our community members, like you, committed to supporting local journalism.
As our fiscal sponsor, The Minneapolis Foundation is a clear, present, and active partner. The Minneapolis Foundation drives collective action to realize strong, vibrant communities. When they launched in 1915, the concept of a community foundation was just a year old. The innovative idea behind it—a place-based organization that allows residents in a community to pool their charitable giving—would go on to transform philanthropy. Today, innovation continues as they redefine the role a community foundation plays in lasting change.
