About Prepare + Prosper

Prepare + Prosper (P+P) is a non-profit that empowers MN residents with accessible financial resources, and advocates for financial empowerment for all. P+P's three main programs are:

1. Free tax preparation (the org has been doing this for 50 years!)

2. Free financial coaching

3. Low and no-fee banking and credit-building solutions

Ok now, don't glaze over. What this means is that community members can get their taxes prepared for FREE, can meet with a financial coach for 6 months plus for FREE, and can open a super straightforward low or no-fee checking, savings, or credit building account even if they have no or poor credit history.

Now tell me that isn't cool! Learn more about P+P at our website.

My unique journey with Prepare + Prosper

In 2017 I engaged with the Money Mentors program as a participant. Then I volunteered as a coach in the same program for the next 3 years. Now, as of 3 months ago, I started working at P+P as the manager of Money Mentors! My trajectory shows the power P+P can have. As a participant, my coach sat alongside me to listen to my concerns and dreams, help me tackle physical and emotional barriers, and develop and execute a plan to reach my financial goals. That's exactly what I aim to do now for others, as I give back to this fabulous organization and program that empowered me in my financial life.

What does financial empowerment mean to me?

The more I learn about this work, the more it becomes clear to me that our systems are not set up to support all people in becoming financially healthy. Many people in our society are excluded from wealth-building and the financial mainstream, because of who they are, where they live, or what they look like. I believe that WE ALL DESERVE access to the resources needed to be financially healthy. And when all individuals are supported, all of us benefit. Financial wellness has the power to improve our physical and mental health, our relationships, and our ability to work and contribute to society. Money affects every aspect of our lives.

In my personal life, I started learning about personal finance when I realized I was holding myself back because I was afraid of making a wrong move in my financial life. I didn't have enough basic information or experience to feel confident in myself. Why don't we learn about this stuff in school??? I took a fabulous money class from Ruth Hayden (a local money expert focused on women) and then started my own Women and Money group to learn more about financial choices and support one another. In that group I saw that most of us, even those in a position of privilege and wealth, feel like we're in the dark when it comes to money. We all deserve better. My passion is to shed light on financial systems, resources, and options so that more people can feel confident and stable in their financial lives.
