How would you like to get a bird’s eye view of the confluence of our local waterways? Help Friends of Freedom Park make that happen by supporting a brand-new and exciting project during Give to the Max Day this Thursday, Nov 15! The Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center at Freedom Park has the opportunity to create an engaging new exhibit: a photographic floor map of the Mississippi and St. Croix rivers that will provide this unique aerial viewpoint for visitors.
Our watershed is a region of abundant natural resources. Majestic rivers, dramatic bluffs, prospering wildlife, national parks, and trails unite two states, four counties and four communities together. The Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center at Freedom Park is located at the confluence of these two magnificent riverways, and part of our educational mission is to teach visitors about the value and interrelationship of humans and nature.
Several times each year experts teach program attendees about the importance of preserving the health of the rivers, the streams, and the marshes that support our flora and fauna, draw visitors from across the globe, and create recreational opportunities. A floor map displayed where visitors can walk on it will be an effective and memorable teaching tool. A child standing on the map who can spot their family’s favorite fishing hole, swimming beach, or frog-catching grounds will be able to step back and see how these special areas are connected to the larger ecosystem. This is a unique opportunity to spark conversations, forge new connections, and engage new learning pathways.
This map, at a cost of approximately $5,800, will be a permanent fixture of the Center available to every visitor and training partner, reminding us all of the importance and fragility of the river system. Donate on Give to the Max Day and help us make this happen!
