How To Acquire PROXIMITIES

Update posted 3 years ago

Lest we forget, e-commerce.

By donating $100 or more here on the GiveMN site you will not only receive a copy of PROXIMITIES (shipping via USPS Media Mail included) but you will also help offset the enormous cost of design and production incurred to make PROXIMITIES the fitting tribute to Linda Brooks and her work that it is. The expenses and time involved were at least double what we predicted.

Unfortunately, since the book has gone to press, we will not be able to give thanks for your donation in the book.

We guarantee, though, that you will be impressed by this volume, which evokes an atmosphere of change over the last four decades of social tumult and creative energy in American photographic arts.

Your donation via this web portal will be tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

PROXIMITIES reflections on art, education, activism

Renee 21, 1947     2012

Linda Brooks (b. Brooklyn, New York, 1951) began a life-long journey in the arts as a student in Buffalo, New York, where she earned her BFA and MFA degrees from SUNY, Buffalo (in 1973 and 1976, respectively).

Family, role identity, and connection to community have been enduring themes in Brooks' work over the past four decades. She has been among Minnesota's most accomplished and esteemed photographic artists since relocating here in the year of America's Bicentennial.

Her path has intersected with major events in American cultural life since the 1970s. Her art from these times has looked inward, at family members and herself, reflecting the notion advanced by American writer Carol Hanisch in a 1970 essay titled The Personal is Political  that many individual experiences, particularly those of women, can be traced to one’s location within a system of power relationships.

During a teaching career that spanned ten years in the Studio Arts Department at the University of Minnesota and 27 years at St. Paul Academy and Summit School (St. Paul) Brooks influenced the lives of two generations of college and high school students.

Brooks has received awards from the Minnesota State Arts Board, the McKnight Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and is a 2018-2019 Hermitage Fellow in the Hermitage Artist Residency program (Englewood, FL). Her work has been exhibited and collected by major institutions. Visit lbrooksphoto.com for additional biographic detail and portfolios of her work.

About the Book

PROXIMITIES  began its life as an autobiographical presentation made at the Women's Art Institute at St. Catherine University (St. Paul) and TC Photo (Minneapolis) during 2018, and at the Hermitage Artist Retreat in January 2019.

As a book, it will narrate Brooks' insightful work and chart the passion she has articulated during a remarkable life as a teacher, mentor, and community artist-leader.

Please support this noted artist's first monographic publication, to be released in concert with TC Photo's commitment to contemporary photobooks.

Donations of all size are welcome. Those who donate $100 or more will be mentioned in the publication AND will receive a free copy of the finished book.

TC Photo is a 501(c)(3) organization. Donations are handled by our fiscal sponsor, Springboard for the Arts, and are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.
