Hey y'all!! I first came to the Boundary Waters to paddle 15 years ago with some dear friends and fell in love immediately. The BWCA captured my heart to the point that I ended up quitting my office job to pursue a career in the outdoors. 15 years later, after guiding kids and families not only in the BWCA but other wilderness areas, and building a therapy practice based in play and the outdoors, my husband Eddie and I have moved to Ely, MN, a community on the edge of the Boundary Waters, to pursue a shared goal of being part of this community and giving back to the wilderness that has so deeply changed us. Our Blue Heeler, Bear, my sister Emmy, and her two cats, Mouse and Katia, also joined. The next one on the list, is our son Boon (EJBIII), sometime around the end of June or beginning of July.
Tomorrow, Eddie and I will do a short two day trip to Hegman Lakes to raise money for this dear place we love, to celebrate the changing of this season of life and the earth, and to share this place anew with Emmy, Bear, and still in his womb, baby Boon, who will travel with us. Below is the detailed story of WHY we are raising money and awareness for this place that is not only where we feel local, but now also our home and community. Please join us in "speaking loudly for this quiet place."
Save the Boundary Waters leads the effort to permanently protect the Boundary Waters from toxic copper mining.
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is America’s most visited Wilderness and is threatened by proposed risky sulfide-ore copper mining.
1.1 million acres of interconnected waterways, uninterrupted boreal forests, and diverse wildlife.
The Boundary Waters is beloved by millions of people who come to paddle, hike, ski, snowshoe, hunt, and fish
You can help protect America’s most visited Wilderness by making a donation today.
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) is a 1.1 million-acre haven of lakes, rivers, and forests along the Minnesota-Canada border — one of the most critical regions for climate resiliency. Protected for over a century, it holds 20% of all the freshwater in the National Forest System. With 1,100 lakes and 237 miles of hiking trails, it’s a place where millions reconnect with nature, from paddling to hiking to just soaking in the quiet. Home to wildlife like wolves, moose, and loons, the Boundary Waters is one of the last truly wild places left — and it needs protection now more than ever.
Toxic sulfide-ore copper mining has been proposed just upstream of the Boundary Waters. 100% of copper mines experience spills or accidental releases. This type of mining is known as one of the most polluting industries in the U.S., and if it’s allowed to happen here, it could permanently harm the clean water, wildlife, and sense of wild we all treasure. Once the damage is done, there’s no going back.
That’s why we're raising money to help protect the Boundary Waters — not just for us and our family, but for everyone who loves it now and in the future. The funds we raise will support legal action, advocacy, and grassroots organizing to fight back against mining threats and push for permanent protections.
If you’ve ever dipped a paddle in this place, heard the echo of a loon call, or just believe in protecting our public lands — we hope you’ll consider making a donation.
Let’s keep the Boundary Waters wild, for the love of the Boundary Waters.
Peace,
Molly, Eddie, and Boon (EBJIII)
