$3,000 goal

For #GTMD20, we need to raise $3,000 to fill our new weight room with fitness and exercise equipment to support the physical, mental, and psychological health of our youth in residential care!

North Homes Children and Family Services is excited to be launching a new residential program - a Psychiatric Rehabilitative Treatment Facility (PRTF).  This is a in-patient level of care provided in a more therapeutic, residential setting.

As part of this expansion, we are building a new Wellness Center to provide a therapeutic and holistic approach to improve the physical and psychological health of youth and to cultivate long-term resilience.  The Wellness Center will include a space for cultural, spiritual, and family programming; half-court gym; and a weight room.

"The best thing about Spark is that I get to be active... It's fun and then I feel really good after." Youth within our Residential Programs have the opportunity to participate in SPARK - an ongoing program where they learn about the importance of and practice exercise and healthy eating skills, which have been found to support a number of both mental and behavioral health benefits.

SPARK fosters social support through exercise and comradery, instills hope, and provides learners with lifelong skills for wellness and proactive health.

Research on physical exercise has shown to have a number of positive impacts on mental and psychological well-being. Improved mood, motivation, self-esteem, and impulse control are all associated with physical exercise.   It is also known that those who have experienced trauma have an increased Resting Heart Rate (RHR).  Physical exercise helps to lower RHR by reprogramming the brain to learn that it can be okay to be aroused and alert.

How you can help!

  1. Make a direct contribution to this campaign -  a gift of $25, $50, or $100 will go to purchase the equipment needed to help give our youth in residential care life-long skills to support resilience and healthy living while combating the negative mental health consequences of sedentary behaviors.
  2. Donate an item from our wish list of fitness and exercise equipment (below) - Want to give something tangible?  Check out our wish list of equipment below and you can do a direct purchase of something we need!

If interested in donating equipment directly, or if you have any other questions, please contact Angie Erickson, Development Manager at angie.erickson@northhomes.org

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS SUPPORT!
