The MN350 Green New Deal team is working to pass a People’s Climate & Equity Plan for Minneapolis. Inspired by the Portland Clean Energy Fund, which currently raises $60-90 million/year for Portland's clean energy transition, we are doing this work together with a coalition of local unions, environmental & racial justice and energy democracy organizations.
Our goal is to both 1) set bold climate and racial justice goals as part of the city’s current 10 year climate planning process and 2) to allocate adequate long term resources to meet those goals. Our People’s Climate and Equity Plan envisions access to affordable clean energy and green jobs for communities of color, equitable, healthy buildings & neighborhoods and a safe climate for all Minneapolis residents.
The People’s Climate and Equity Plan would allow Minneapolis to take full advantage of new federal funding, and ensure all the benefits of a rapid transition to clean energy are accessible to low income communities of color. Enabling this work to happen neighborhood by neighborhood rather than house by house allows for the creation of family sustaining union jobs and the development of new renewable energy sources such as networked geothermal.
Over the past year Green New Deal team staff and volunteers have engaged 1800 people at 65 events (including 800 people brand new to MN350), sent 700 postcards designed by local artists, and set up teams in every ward and met twice with the mayor and every city council member.
We are currently engaged in the Minneapolis climate action planning process and building strong teams that can hold our bottom lines as discussions about a fund move forward: a dedicated and robust fund for climate and environmental justice with democratic community governance that prioritizes spending in historically disadvantaged communities.
Support our work and help Minneapolis lead the Midwest in the transition to clean energy!
