Support Hatch Dance as we embark on our 4th performance season.

Although this past year brought many challenges, we are emboldened to continue our work with a renewed awareness that art is essential and live performance is vital to our communities.

Hatch Dance is proud of what we’ve accomplished in 2020.

Here are some of our highlights:

Created new collaborative works

  • In early 2020, Helen Hatch and Darrius Strong brought their companies together to create H Y B R I D, and although it did not make it’s premiere (yet), forged new ground as they fused their distinct choreographic voices into this new work.
  • Hatch Dance remounted and re-examined The Machine Stops featuring new electronic music by Seth Conover and Joe Strachan, which like H Y B R I D, has yet to make it to the stage.
  • In the late summer, while navigating social distancing and strict COVID protocol, Bolerobolero co-choreographed by Helen Hatch and Berit Ahlgren in collaboration with 20 dancers, provided an important outlet for artists to move and create together.
  • Worked with NOBLE media to create a film version of Bolerobolero as well as a behind-the-scenes short documentary about the making of the piece.

Performed both virtually and in person

  • Live @ The Shed featuring Bolerobolero, produced by Hatch Dance and Honeyworks, was safely performed outdoors to a socially distanced, completely sold out audience of over 350, not to mention many more curious onlookers.
  • An excerpt of H Y B R I D featuring Helen Hatch and Darrius Strong, was filmed and live-streamed as part of The Cowles Center En Avant Benefit in late 2020.

Supported artists

In 2020, Hatch Dance expanded it’s community of artists by engaging and compensating:

  • 21 dancers
  • 2 musicians
  • 4 Sound designers, tech crew, and videographers

Connected to a larger community

  • Taught classes at Community Movement Collective and ARENA Dance’s Moving Target, two distinct forces in the Twin Cities aiming to make spaces for freelance dance artists to take rigorous classes.
  • Hosted an open rehearsal during the creative process of H Y B R I D, offering our audience an inside look at the creation of a new work and the opportunity for us to receive valuable feedback.
  • Began a partnership with The Lab Taproom in Saint Paul, whose outdoor venue will become an annual part of our season.

Looking forward to 2021, we are excited to:

  • Make our company debut at The Cowles Center with STRONGmovement March 5-6th. We are grateful to have the support of The Cowles Center and the opportunity to reschedule these performances originally set for last March.
  • Release the Bolerobolero film. Details to be announced.
  • Create the Hatch Dance Summer Intensive for pre-professional dance students offering classes in ballet, contemporary, and Hatch Dance repertory.
  • Expand and build Live @ The Shed outdoor performances into an annual event. Fall 2021.

By donating TODAY, November 19th, 2020, Give to the Max Day, your support goes its furthest. Both Givemn.org and Hatch Dance’s fiscal sponsor, Springboard for the Arts, waive their fees for Minnesota’s foremost giving day.

Your generosity allows us to build upon the tremendous momentum this past year has brought to Hatch Dance, and continue our mission to bring together and support accomplished dancers, musicians, and designers from the Twin Cities to create contemplative, collaborative performances that reveal emotional truths, speak to human commonalities, and engage audiences by encouraging a wider sense of belonging.
