It’s Our Anniversary

Like many wonderful nonprofits, the Minnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health was born out of an observed need.

A group of dedicated parents of children with mental health disorders understood that there was an underserved area in children’s health care. Whether grappling with anxiety, autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or other challenges, the issues were prevalent, but viable solutions were scarce.

In 1989, this committed coalition of parents came together to establish The Minnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health, with the primary goal of advocating for their children and those of families throughout Minnesota.

What initially began as a group of parents evolved into a dynamic board of directors, gradually expanding to include a growing staff. From its humble beginnings with a single devoted executive director, Deborah Saxhaug, the organization has expanded into a team of nearly 20 individuals, leading with compassion, knowledge, and support.

Parent support groups were developed in the early days. Family advocacy followed. Education opportunities grew and youth programs flourished.

Today, the commitment to education, support and growth is not only alive but flourishing. With a vibrant Infant & Early Childhood Division, a thriving Youth & Family Services team, a Professional Development team extending their reach, and a Community Engagement team fostering vital community connections, MACMH stands at the forefront of children’s mental health.

MACMH’s mission to “promote and pursue optimal mental health from infancy to young adulthood” guides the work of staff, the board, volunteers and supporters every day.

The Minnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health continues to evolve and innovate ways to serve the children and families of Minnesota, both now and into the future. The foundation laid by those in our dedicated, humble beginnings continues to lead us into a future where all children's mental health, from the earliest stages of life through young adulthood, is cared for and prioritized.
