One of the jewels of northern Minnesota is the Lady Slipper Scenic Byway (Scenic Highway 39/10), located between Blackduck and Highway 2, near Cass Lake. Along this highway there are over 10,000 showy lady’s slippers. Because of the special nature of the roadway, the Byway Leadership Board, formally known as “The Scenic Highway Inc.” was formed in 2003 as a 501(c) 3 organization. The goal of this board is to create opportunities for visitors to discover the value this corridor has for the area, particularly how its inherent beauty and its recreational resources refresh, restore and rejuvenate people.

The Scenic Byway is undergoing a multi-year reconstruction project. Without our intervention, the widening of the road would be devastating to the orchid population. The Lady Slipper Scenic Byway Committee is dedicated to maintaining a nearly uninterrupted presence of showy lady slippers along the highway.  We have been working with the Chippewa National Forest, Beltrami County Highway Department and others on a plan to salvage, store and return showy lady’s slippers to the roadway after the highway reconstruction is complete. This will be a multi-year effort, and will require a number of resources, including funding. Be a part of the effort by symbolically adopting our state flowers! Suggested donation, $10 per plant.
