I have always been a very active reader, ever since I was young. I will fully admit, that after four years of reading nothing but textbooks, I haven't yet been able to read for fun after graduation. I'm hoping that will soon change. There is nothing like getting lost in a good book. My favorite books are nonfiction, especially autobiographies.
I truly believe reading has helped me get to where I am today. Literacy is the foundation for shaping the future. According to LiteracyMN.org, more than 3 million adults in the U.S. read at or below a third grade level. This is why our library is so important. It's so much more than a place to checkout books. The outreach programs allow those that are homebound or live out of town access to the wonderful materials the library has to offer. I remember the book mobile parked outside of the grocery store ever Saturday morning when I was growing up. Our library also has computers, printers, and hotspots available. Patrons can even receive help building a resume and applying for jobs. The service that speaks to me the most has to be Rochester Reading Champions. Talented tutors are paired with kids and adults to work on reading and writing skills. During 2019, youth RCC participants gain an average of 2.7 grade levels in reading and 2.2 levels in spelling! So please join me in Supporting the Rochester Public Library so they can continue to serve and support our community in so many amazing ways.
