Changes in chimney construction and development of modern heating methods have greatly reduced nesting and roosting sites for Chimney Swifts. Historically these birds nested in hollow trees. They later adapted to masonry chimneys.
But over the past 40 years, Chimney Swift populations have dropped by over 50%.
Agassiz Audubon is working with local communities to help create new nesting and roosting structures for these amazing insect-eating birds. Building materials for just one Chimney Swift tower cost $500. Labor will be provided by local volunteers.
