The Longville Area food shelf is a non-profit, charitable organization that distributes food to those who have difficulty purchasing enough to avoid hunger.   We have a wide variety of people who come to us in times of need.  For example, last year during COVID, I was distributing food curbside, when I had the privilege of meeting David (names changed to protect privacy) David was visiting the Food shelf for the first time.  David and his wife Amy had always worked hard and had a little nest egg saved up for retirement.  David is diabetic and has severe neuropathy in his feet.  Because of an infection in David’s toes, he had to have all 5 toes amputated and has been unable to work.

In early 2020, both unemployment and short-term disability ran out for David.  With the medical bills and expenses pilling up and only Amy able to work, they had to use their nest egg to pay bills. It was about this time that David came to the Food Shelf for help.   David has a hard time walking because it is very painful.   And because he has almost no feeling in his feet, it is dangerous for him to walk and drive.  With Amy working during the day, and no way to safely get to the Food Shelf.  I worked with a local church to arrange to have food delivered to David and Amy once a month.  Because the food shelf is here to help with things like food, David and Amy have money available to pay utilities, keep a roof over their head and catch up on car payments.  This is just one example of why people visit our food shelf.  We are here when our neighbors and friends need a little extra help.   It doesn’t matter if that help is long term or short term, the food shelf is here to help.

I want to Thank David and Amy for allowing me to share their story.  David said, “I truly appreciate and love Amy for her caring and sacrifices during these truly difficult times. I couldn’t have gotten through without you.”  The Longville Area Food Shelf cares about you both and will be here for as long as you need us.

This year the food shelf is working to earn a match of up to $5,000.00 from Raise MN, during the Give to the Max Campaign.  By donating between November 1st and November 18th to the Longville Area Food Shelf, you will help us to earn this matching gift!  You can donate online at GiveMN.org or mail a check to PO Box 308, Longville, MN 56655.  Help us to continue helping our neighbors and friends when life becomes challenging and need a little extra boost.

Your gift to GiveMN help nonprofits and schools learn to use GiveMN to fundraise more efficiently and grow charitable giving in Minnesota by connecting more donors with more causes than any other organization!
