According to the World Wide Web Foundation, women are 50% less likely than men to access the Internet. Of these women, only 21% use the Internet to find information regarding health, legal rights, or public transport. This is especially true among underrepresented populations and those who need access and resources the most.

Find Your Power focuses on empowering underrepresented women by expanding their access to fundamental resources and the Internet. Ultimately, we want the women we work with to be long-term internet users because we know that when they are, they are better able to financially support themselves and they have the autonomy to do so.

This year Find Your Power has been working hard, learning the needs of local African immigrant and women in abusive situations. Our research through community-based needs assessment and key informant interviews has been with organizations such as Haven Housing, Pillsbury United Communities, Tubman, 360 Communities, and Asian Women United of Minnesota (AWUM). We will use the results to develop an engaging, user-friendly, and culturally appropriate tool to expand Internet usage.

We have been honored and humbled to work with the women both representing the above organizations and those receiving their services. We strongly believe that working together and sharing our knowledge and connections, makes us all stronger.

As Terry Tempest Williams wrote, “When women suffer, children suffer. To empower women is to empower a community.” And that is precisely what Find Your Power aims to do.
