Property improvements to better serve our patients, including a Flight Pen for our raptors.

$150,000 goal

WE DID IT!

Update posted 5 years ago

WE HAVE REACHED OUR FUNDRAISING GOAL AND THEN SOME!!!!

THANK YOU to all the wonderful donors who helped us exceed our goal!

We have reached both our fundraising goal and the goal to have the Flight Pen ready to use for the Raptor Season.

The flight pen has been completed and has been christened with a test flight of a Red Tail Hawk and an Eagle! It's just in time too, sine our fall raptor season has begun.  We expect to use it for our next winged patients!

The 2nd mammal pen is now our new focus.   We are hopeful that we can break ground this Fall.   The 15 inches of early snow we received this week will make excavation more challenging.   Our major concern is the ground freezing.    That will stop us from setting the concrete poles for the fencing.    Cross  your fingers that we get a fall warm up . . . after all it's not even Halloween yet!

We have the plans, contractors and funds all lined up.   Now we just need Mother Nature to come to the party!

Wild and Free is installing some EXCITING additions to our facility.   We decided that Wild and Free really needed 3 major enhancements.

A Flight Pen - COMPLETE!

(for our larger raptors; Eagles, Hawks, Owls, Falcon etc)

Snowy Owl

Our current pens allow our raptors to recover from their injuries but did not give them enough room to exercise. . . In other words FLY!

Since flying is critical to survival, we knew we needed to improve our pens.   This meant building a Flight Pen.

Our flight pen goals are to create a pen whereRed Tail Hawk

  • the birds can still be in a safe place to recover.    This means is NO CHAIN LINK FENCING.    Is there an alternative?  You bet and you probably guessed it; it costs more money!
  • be as natural as possible (natural lighting and temperatures)
  • have room to spread their wings and actually fly from one point to another

Our solution hits all of these points including the ability for a bird to fly almost 100 feet.

Property Fences - COMPLETE!

To keep our volunteers and animals safe and secure, we need to install perimeter fencing.

New Outdoor Enclosures - Complete

(for Fox, Raccoons, Coyotes, and Bobcats)

As we grow, the number of mammals we receive each year has also grown.

Red Fox

We have pens that meet each of these species' special needs. However, there have been times where we were scrambling to accommodate all of our patients. Our goal is to double our outdoor small mammal pens.

Release of a liter of Bobcats.

As you can imagine, it will take considerable funds to complete these improvements. . . The total needed is:   $150,000 !  But the great news is that we are already over 50% of the way to raising this total!
