Thank you for being here, and for your support of EMK performances. I have several exciting projects in the works for 2024 and beyond, and I can't wait to bring them to life with your support.

I approach all my work with the deep knowing that creating powerful contemporary performance is the way that I can impact the world, can give. I find that making art, especially the searingly vulnerable variety that I create, is both the hardest and most fulfilling thing that I could endeavor to do. I make it for all the versions of me that I’ve been through history; I make it so my niece and nephew will know that being big and full is something to honor; I make it so women will see pieces of themsevles reflected and feel pieces of themselves held; I make is so fellow survivors can remember their astounding strength; and I make it so you can remember how incredible you are, how utterly human, and cosmic, and profound. I make it so we can be fucking inspired to live.

It’s the loftiest.

ABOUT EMILY

Emily Michaels King is a performing artist based in St. Paul, Minnesota exploring authentic expression and human depth through movement, multimedia, and visual compositions. Her work has been presented at the Walker Art Center, the Guthrie Theater, Candy Box Dance Festival, Red Eye Theater, and Movement Research among others. She is also a part of the collaborative duo E/D with Debra Berger who creates performances centered on the experiences of being a woman.

Emily is known for her fearless personal work, provocative compositions, and collaged evening-length solo performances, including: her award winning show MAGIC GIRL; multimedia online work DIGITAL, which she performed live via Zoom from her bedroom; IN PERSON, a companion to DIGITAL; and the raucous CHICKEN WING. An in-progress version of her solo, ELECTRIC, was performed at the Arena Dance’s 2022 CandyBox Festival. She’s also created solo commissions for Twin Cities Horror Festival, Four Humors Theater, and rock band Kiss the Tiger.

Pairing minimalism and subtlety with cacophony and bared irreverence, Emily’s works employ the lush landscape of the inner world and the power of unapologetic vulnerability. They combine movement with text, graphics, sound, and technology to focus on themes of self discovery and reclamation, womanhood, and bold expressions of personal truth.

UPCOMING PROJECTS

IN PERSON - Development
When I premiered my multimedia work, IN PERSON, in February of 2022, the challenge of it almost stopped me in my tracks. The show was more complex and ambitious than anything I’d ever attempted in my artistic career, and while I pushed ahead then and shared the piece as it was, I knew I had just scratched the surface of what was possible. This Winter I'll be in the rehearsal room expanding and deepening IN PERSON into a more ambitious and striking show than ever before. Let phase 2 commence. This show does not currently have performance dates on the books. My time with it this year will be focused on creation.

NEW SOLO - Production
A new EMK show is coming your way next Fall! This evening length solo will be made with the rigor that EMK projects are known for and aimed to hit you right where it counts. I can’t wait to bring you along for the journey and share many more details as the process unfolds.
