Money is health and access to tax refunds, bank accounts, credit, and trusted financial coaches keep people financially safe and stable.
As a nonprofit working towards economic justice, the work we do at Prepare + Prosper to "build brighter financial futures" has never been more urgent than in this moment where those we reach are disproportionately impacted by the public health and economic crises.
The pursuit of economic justice cannot be separated from the pursuit of racial justice.
The disparities and civil unrest is shining a bright light on the historical and current systemic and structural racism that exists for Black and Brown communities. The inequities and disparities of today were built on 400 years of systemic racism, and the banking industry and tax system have played an outsized role. It's no easy feat to realize economic security and resilience let alone achieve economic mobility with the deck stacked against you.
- Blacks have 10 cents for every dollar in wealth held by whites.
- Median net worth for a black family is ~$16,000—compared to ~ $163,000 for whites
- Nearly half of black households compared to 17% of white households are unbanked or underbanked — a disparity that, over the course of a financial lifetime, can cost nearly $40,000 in fees.
- Black customers pay $190.09 more in fees to maintain a basic, entry-level checking accounts than their White counterparts. Bank accounts with their minimum balances and overdraft fees are set up to punish those with less wealth.
I am committed to using my privilege and place within these systems to continue to actively call out the decades of exclusionary practices and push against racist financial systems that P+P's customers operate within. Please join me in one such act of using my privilege to donate to Prepare + Prosper this Give to the Max Day!
